  • VAE Dispersions for Paints and Coatings: Performance, Applications and Grade Selection
    Sep 24, 2026
Vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) dispersions are increasingly used as polymer binders in modern water-based paints and architectural coatings. Compared with conventional solvent-containing coating systems, VAE-based formulations can provide a combination of low emissions, good film formation, wet scrub resistance and effective pigment binding.   1. Why VAE Dispersions Are Suitable for Modern Interior Paints One of the main challenges in formulating interior paints is achieving good film formation without unnecessarily increasing VOC emissions. Traditional formulations may rely on solvents or coalescing aids to improve film formation, particularly when the polymer has a relatively high minimum film formation temperature (MFFT). During drying, water evaporates from the coating and the polymer particles gradually come into closer contact. Under suitable formulation conditions, water can contribute to the softening and coalescence of the polymer phase. This behavior, often described as a hydroplasticization effect, can support film formation at lower temperatures. Beyond low-emission profiles, Celanese VAE dispersions offer a distinct economic and optical advantage in high Pigment Volume Concentration (PVC) interior paints. By functioning effectively as spacers between individual pigment and filler particles, VAE polymers significantly enhance the hiding power and opacity of matte and satin finishes. This advanced spacer mechanism empowers paint manufacturers to optimize or reduce titanium dioxide (TiO2) consumption while maintaining superior hiding coverage across diverse spreading rates, ultimately lowering raw material production costs.   2. Comparing VAE Grades for Different Coating Applications VAE Grades Solids Viscosity mPa·s (25°C) Tg MFFT pH Celvolit 1602 (SG) 55% 100 – 700 12°C 0°C 4.5 EcoVAE 1608 55% 500 – 3000 10°C 0°C 4.5 EcoVAE 1609 (SG) 55% 800 – 3000 10°C 0°C 4.5   Celvolit 1602 (SG): It is the premier choice for low-emission interior matte and satin paints. Its optimized shear stability allows it to be seamlessly formulated into low-emission plasters and textured architectural coatings. EcoVAE 1608: Stabilized with specialized surfactants and cellulose derivatives, this is tailored for thixotropic paints, deep-shade tinting systems, and decorative textured finishes. EcoVAE 1609 (SG): Offering superior opacity coverage and ultra-low emissions, this grade stands out as a best-in-class regional binder for multi-functional decorative coating systems.   3. Conclusion VAE dispersions provide a versatile binder platform for water-based paints and architectural coatings. Their combination of low MFFT, film-forming capability, surface hardness, wet scrub resistance and potential for low-emission formulations makes them suitable for a broad range of interior coating applications. For formulators, the key is not simply choosing a VAE dispersion with the highest or lowest value for a particular parameter. Instead, solids content, viscosity, Tg, MFFT, stabilization technology and end-use requirements should be evaluated as an integrated system. With the right grade and formulation design, VAE binders can support the development of interior paints that balance low emissions, hiding power, surface durability and application performance.   Website: www.elephchem.com whatsapp: (+)86 13851435272 E-mail: admin@elephchem.com
